DOSAGE FORM
Ointment for intramammary application

COMPOSITION
Each 10 mℓ injector contains Cephapirin 300 mg as Cephapirin benzathine

PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION
C 24.1 Intramammary preparations - Antimicrobials

PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
Cephapirin is a cephalosporin antibiotic of the β-lactam group, inhibiting the cell wall synthesis of bacteria by inactivating transpeptidase, thus producing a bactericidal effect.  Cephapirin is a first generation cephalosporin, effective against many gram-positive cocci and some gram-negative organisms primarily Eschericia coli, Klebsiella, Streptococcus agalactiae, S. dysgalactiae and S. uberis.

INDICATIONS
Cephudder is a dry cow remedy that should only be used during the dry period, normally directly after the last milking before the cow is dried off.  It is indicated for the treatment of existing sub-clinical udder infections or for the prevention of new infections which may occur during the dry period.  It should be used against bacteria sensitive to cephapirin, e.g. Streptococci, Staphylococci, Arcanobacterium pyogenes, Eschericia coli, Klebsiella.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS

  • Not to be used in cows known to be allergic to cephalosporins.
  • Not to be used in lactating cows.

WARNINGS
Individuals handling the product that are allergic to cephalosporins should avoid contact with the product.

WITHDRAWAL PERIOD
Meat and organs:  Slaughter permitted 21 days (3 weeks) after treatment
Milk:  2 milkings after calving, provided that the dry period has lasted more than 35 days (5 weeks).  In the event of the dry period lasting less than 5 weeks, milk should be tested for cephapirin residues before sale.

DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE
The contents of one injector are infused into each quarter when the cow is dried off.

Administration
SHAKE SYRINGE BEFORE USE FOR AT LEAST ONE MINUTE
Before use, milk the udder completely.  Clean the teat thoroughly and disinfect.  Remove the cap from the end of the nozzle of the injector and partially or totally, depending on the partial of total insertion.  Insert the nozzle carefully into the opening of the teat.  Squeeze the entire contents of the injector slowly into the teat and massage gently to disperse the suspension upwards into the quarter.  Massage the quarter with care.

SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Cephapirin has been found to be practically non-toxic.  A transient rise in cell counts can be seen which has no influence on the milk yield.
Occasional allergies to cephapirin may occur, but these are rare.

INTERACTIONS
Antagonism between Cephudder and preparations containing bacteriostatic compounds may occur.
