Product Details - S4 CHRONO-GEST® 40 mg GREY SPONGE (FOR SHEEP)

App. No 83/885 Act 101/1965

Composition:
Each impregnated sponge contains 40 mg Fluorogestone acetate.

Pharmacological Classification:
C20.4 Ovulation controlling agents and prostoglandins.

Pharmacological Action:
Whilst in the vagina the sponge releases fluorogestone acetate, a progestagen which is absorbed and subjects the ewe to a progestational action comparable to the luteal phase of the sexual cycle. This artificially imposed progestational phase is ended by the removal of the sponge. Injection with Folligon® (Chrono-gest PMSG) at the time of sponge removal induces a simultaneous start of the follicular phase in the treated animals. Follicles then develop and synchronised oestrus and ovulation follow.

Indications:
To induce synchronised oestrus and ovulation in Sheep.

Contra-indications:

  • Do not use Chrono-gest in sheep with a vaginal discharge or in animals which have just aborted.
  • Do not use Chrono-gest within 60 to 75 days after lambing.

Warnings:
Sponges eaten by animals can cause impaction. Burn the sponges after use.

Withdrawal Period:

  • Milk: Nil after the insertion of the sponge.
  • Meat: During the treatment and until 5 days after the removal of the sponges.

Dosage and Directions for Use:

  • A single sponge is inserted into the vagina by means of the applicator supplied.
  • The sponge is left in situ for 14 days.
  • It is preferable to withdraw the sponges in the morning, so that mating or AI can take place during daytime. On removal of the sponge an injection of Folligon (Chrono-gest PMSG) 400-600 i.u. is given intramuscularly. During the breeding season 1 ram for 10 ewes should be provided. Hand mating i.e. presenting ewes one by one to the ram, has been shown to give the best results. A ram should be given 10 minutes rest between services.
