Pharmacological Classification
C.22.6 Female sex hormones.
Pharmacological Action
Fertagyl is the synthetic equivalent of the natural gonadotrophin releasing hormone, a decapeptide produced in the hypothalamus which acts on the anterior pituitary to bring about the release of both LH and FSH. Shortly after administration of Fertagyl,
LH and FSH will be released from the pituitary. At the recommended dosage a marked increase in LH levels will be induced and optimal FSH release will be obtained. The FSH and LH released will induce follicle maturation and subsequent ovulation following
the normal physiological pattern. Fertagyl exerts a favourable influence on the ovaries during the follicular phase of the oestrus cycle.
Indications
Fertagyl is indicated for the treatment of cystic ovaries, the prevention of delayed ovulation and the improvement of fertility in the post-partum phase in cattle. It is also indicated for ovulation induction of rabbits.
Cattle: Cystic Ovaries: Cystic ovaries are a common cause of infertility in cattle especially in dairy cattle. In the cystic ovarian syndrome, various conditions of the ovary, such as luteinised and follicular cysts, can be involved. The condition is diagnosed by rectal palpation revealing the presence of persisting follicular structure(s) with a diameter over 2.5 cm.
Clinically the presence of ovarian cysts may result in irregular return to oestrus or even nymphomania. In many cases anoestrus may be observed.
Cattle: Prevention of Delayed Oestrus: It has been demonstrated that a LH-surge induced at the day of A.I. improves the A.I. results. By injecting Fertagyl on the day of A.I. a delayed ovulation can be prevented.
Cattle: Improvement of the Fertility Rate in the Post-partum Phase: Especially in high yielding dairy cattle it has been shown that by injecting Fertagyl in the early post-partum period (40 days) many ovarian disorders can be prevented.
Rabbits: Ovulation Induction: In rabbits the number of litters per doe per year can be significantly increased by injecting Fertagyl on day 2 after delivery.
