Pharmacological Action
Folligon (serum gonadotrophin) is a complex glycoprotein.  Pharmacologically pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) is a gonadotrophin with high FSH- as well as LH- activities.  Due to its FSH activity, serum gonadotrophin stimulates the growth of the interstitial cells of the ovary as well as the growth and maturation of the follicles.  Due to its LH activity, PMSG also induces ovulation which could be demonstrated in superovulation trials.  In the male, PMSG stimulates development of the interstitial tissue of the testis and spermatogenesis.

Indications
Folligon can be used for the control of fertility problems in animals:

• Anoestrus (oestrus induction and increase of ovarian activity leading to an increased fertility) in the cow, the rabbit, the bitch and in mink.
• Superovulation (required for embryo transplantation) in the cow, rabbit and in deer.
• Increase of fertility rate after progestagen oestrus synchronisation therapy (oestrus induction and synchronisation, increase of ovarian activity) in the cow, ewe, goat and deer.
•  Impaired spermatogenesis in male animals.

Contra-indications
Hypersensitivity to serum gonadotrophin.

Warnings
Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.

Withdrawal Period
No withholding period for meat or milk from animals treated with Folligon is necessary.

Dosage and Directions for Use

* Anoestrus is often caused by inadequate management (feeding and housing).  Therefore, improvement of management is a prerequisite for successful treatment.

Side-effects and special precautions
In rare cases as with all protein containing preparations, anaphylactic type reactions may occur shortly after administration.  In such circumstances, prompt medication with adrenaline or glucocorticosteroids may be indicated.

Known symptoms of overdosage and particulars of its treatment
Overdosage produces superovulation which may be so excessive that it produces largely non viable ova.  Overdosage could also result in cystic ovaries.

Storage Instructions
Store at 8 - 15°C.  Protect from light.
In-use period:  Once reconstituted use within 12 hours and keep refrigerated.

Identification
Folligon 1000 IU is a white freeze-dried crystalline plug packed in a clear glass vial.  The solvent is a clear aqueous solution in a clear glass vial.
