App. No. 83/668   Act 101/1965

Composition
Procaine benzylpenicillin 297,92 mg (300 000 i.u.), nafcillin 100 mg, dihydrostreptomycin 100 mg.

Pharmacological Classification
21.1 Antibiotics and Antibiotic Combinations.

Pharmacological Action
Synergism between penicillin and streptomycin produces a greater activity than the use of either drug by itself, and in combination with the semi-synthetic nafcillin, ensures a broad spectrum of activity against a wide range of bacteria, including penicillin resistant staphylococci and coliforms. One injector per quarter will maintain active levels of antibiotics in the udder for up to 8 weeks.

Indications
For the treatment of sub-clinical mastitis at drying-off and for the prevention of mastitis caused by bacteria sensitive to penicillin, streptomycin and/or nafcillin during the dry period of bovines. Also indicated in sheep and goats.

Contra-indications

  • Must not be used in lactating cows.
  • Not to be administered to animals known to be allergic to penicillins and dihydrostreptomycin.
  • Animoglycosides may impair neuromuscular transmission and should not be given to animals with myasthenia gravis or animals suffering from myasthenia gravis-like symptoms.

Warnings

  • Occasional allergies to penicillin have been observed, but these are rare.
  • Never use the same injector for the treatment of more than one teat.
  • Do not use concurrently with other aminoglycosides as this may increase the risk of toxicity.
  • Keep out of reach of children and uninformed persons.

Withdrawal Periods

  • Meat : No withdrawal period.
  • Organs : 5 weeks
  • Milk: : 3 milkings after calving, provided that the dry period has lasted at least 5 weeks. If the period has lasted less than 5 weeks, milk should be tested for antibiotic residues before delivery.

Dosage and Directions for Use
Cow: The contents of one 3 g injector is infused into each quarter when the cow is dried off at the end of each lactation.

Sheep and goats: 1 tube per quarter.

Administration

  • Never use the same injector for the treatment of more than one teat. This would prevent the transmission of infectious matter from one quarter to the other.
  • Before use, milk the udder completely dry.
  • Clean the end of the teat thoroughly, remove the cap from the nozzle of injector and insert nozzle carefully into the opening of the teat.
  • Squeeze the complete contents of injector slowly into the teat, while massaging the teat to disperse the ointment upward into the quarter.
